Bemis Okada Sculpture Facility
Omaha, NE
17,120 SF
$1,620,000

In 2005, The Bemis Center for Contemporary Arts asked AO to design a new sculpture and ceramics studio in a building across the street from their main gallery and residence studios to expand the facilities offered to incoming artists. The 17,120-SF Okada building was built in 1910 as a fruit and vegetable transfer building on the south edge of the Old Market Historic District. Work included the infill of the existing masonry openings with a combination of glass and metal to provide privacy from the street; the conversion of office space to a kiln room, clay mixing room, spray booth, and a welding room; new ADA restrooms; proper heating, cooling, and ventilation; new lighting; and that installation of helical piers to support the settling structure. The $1,620,000 renovation opened in 2011.
